On September 21, at “the 5th Berth” Yacht Club in Taganrog, foreign students of the Southern Federal University celebrated the Mid-Autumn Holiday, which is considered one of the most important traditional holidays in China.
The mid-autumn holiday symbolizes the unity of the family and is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The mid-autumn festival dates back more than 3,000 years and was originally considered a celebration of moon worship.
The event symbolizes three main ideas: a gathering of people, especially relatives, initially for the autumn harvest, thanksgiving for the harvest; a bright full moon is seen as a symbol of a family gathered together; wishes for longevity, happiness, children or marriage.
During the day, students competed in agility, riding dragon boats, enjoying the aroma of Chinese tea with moon cakes, and also guessing at fate with the help of Guan Yin sticks.
The event was organized by the Department for Work with Foreign Students of the Southern Federal University in cooperation with the Russian-Chinese Friendship Club of the Southern Federal University and the Rostov branch of the Association of Foreign Students.
