"The Illusion of Deception": Secrets of Magic at Studesna-2025 from the Faculty of Business “Captains”

28.03.2025

On March 26, the Rostov-on-Don Regional House of Folk Art hosted a concert titled "The Illusion of Deception" by the Captains Business Faculty of the Southern Federal University.

This year's student production is based on the popular film "The Illusion of Deception", which tells about talented illusionists Merritt McKinney, Daniel Atlas, Henley Reeves, Jack Wilder, hiding large—scale robberies behind grandiose shows.

FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol detective Alma Dray are trying to track down and bring to justice a team of magicians who commit bank robberies during their performances and reward the audience with money. They perform at shows in Las Vegas and New Orleans under the pseudonym "The Four Horsemen" and are popular with the general public because they are elusive and generous.

Thaddeus Bradley, a former illusionist and trick-taker, reveals to the FBI and Interpol agents the secrets of several tricks that the horsemen have in their arsenal, but refuses to contribute to their capture. He only explains to the agents that magic is an art that magicians master perfectly.

Thanks to their exceptional abilities, magicians are always one step ahead of those who are trying to expose them and arrest them. Maybe it wasn't an accident?

There is a suspicion that the show of elusive illusionists is supervised by a certain powerful secret organization "Oko", and Dylan Rhodes may be a secret "fifth horseman". The plot intrigue persists until the very end of the production.

The plot of this book once again demonstrates to us at first glance the obvious thesis that you should not always trust your eyes, that the result of any venture will be achieved with a certain amount of adventurism, but talent and skill are always at the core. That, in fact, our world is a set of projections and illusions, where much (if not all!) it depends on the refraction of the gaze and the point of view.

Vivid monologues, impressive interactions with the audience, special effects, levitation tricks, and even a live rabbit disappearing into a black box right on stage.… The film "The Illusion of Deception" was made as one big trick, the secret of which the audience will not be able to figure out until the very end.

But the most important magic lies in the ability of four independent individuals to create a cohesive and effective team. And the Captains do a great job with this "trick", no matter if they are on stage at that moment or behind the scenes.
